The Old Spanish Trail

This week the Mesa County Commissioners asked the Grand Junction City Council to delay any decision that would set the stage for the proposed development of The Shores, LLC. Commissioners asked for this postponement until the state, county, city and other concerned citizens have the opportunity to fully explore the options to conserve this area as open space for public use.

The significant recreational values of the affected and adjacent lands, in this otherwise fast-growing segment of our community, combined with the truly important historical dimensions associated with this property that interfaces with the congressionally designated Old Spanish Trail, all make this a prime candidate for open space conservation.

Senator Josh Penry has had preliminary conversations with Great Outdoors Colorado about the possibility of open space grants and we believe this historic landscape is a perfect candidate for funding through Mesa County's Conservation Trust dollars. Additionally, we know that citizens in the area have had a number of conservations with the Bureau of Land Management about a range of conservation options.

Clifton Retail

In its efforts to draw more retail into the Fruitvale/Clifton area, Mesa County has contracted with a company to determine the shopping needs in the East end of the Valley and what potential retailers are looking for our type of demographics. That report should be completed by the end of June. In the mean time, Janet attended the International Council of Shopping Centers Trade Show last week, to learn about the best options for drawing retailers to our area. Expect to hear more about this over the summer.

My Space for Parents
In our continuing efforts to support parents who might be struggling with the overwhelming job of parenting, Mesa County’s “How are the Children?” initiative is moving forward with its plans to create a My Space for parents. Krysta Martin, a student from Palisade High School began work on the design this week. When complete this My Space will host a forum for parents, and advice column “Ask Annie”, and links to lots of other great resources for parents. Stay tuned for me details!

Report Child Abuse
In Partnership with the Meth Task Force’s Drug Endangered Children committee, the “How are the Children?” initiative kicked off its campaign encouraging parents to report abuse or neglect. Signs on bus benches have gone up all across the valley and a television advertising campaign is in full swing, thanks to the generosity of the Grand Junction Rotary. Read more about how to identify child abuse or attend the training on Thursday June 23rd at 6:00pm. For more information contact Janet at janet.rowland@mesacounty.us

Benevolent Community Partnership (BCP)
One of the key purposes of the BCP is to insure that people who are need of supportive services know about and have access to services that are available in Mesa County. Because people are often referred to those types of services by their doctor’s office, the BCP is hosting a Health Care Workers luncheon and mini information fair on June 26th . If you would like more information about the Health Care Workers luncheon or about the BCP in general contact Janet at janet.rowland@mesacounty.us
