Grand Junction Comprehensive Plan Neighborhood Meeting
On March 5th, Grand Junction hosted one in a series of neighborhood meetings to gather public comment about the future of Grand Junction, including the expansion of the Persigo Sewer Plant. The Persigo Plant is jointly operated by the City of Grand Junction and Mesa County. If sewer service is expanded it will make available additional land for development of housing and commercial development. It is no secrete that available housing is difficult to find, which is driving up the cost of housing. Ensuring sewer is available and opening up more land for development is one way that Mesa County can help reduce the cost of housing. Several more meetings are planned in March and April prior to a decision being made by the City Council and County Commissioners at a joint meeting of the Persigo Board in late April.
County Coffee in Collbran
On Thursday, March 6, County Commissioner Janet Rowland was joined by Clerk and Record Janice Rich and County Surveyor Lee Stiles for Coffee in Collbran. Residents shared their thoughts about issues ranging from roads and housing to voting machines and recycling. These monthly coffees, which happen in various rural parts of our county, are a great way for County Commissioners and other local elected officials to get in touch with the residents in the rural parts of our county.
Child Abuse Prevention
COMMUNITY EDUCATION
The child abuse prevention efforts continue to be strong in Mesa County and on March 6th a group of representatives from law enforcement, the District Attorney’s office, DHS, School District 51, Hilltop, the Partnership for Children and Families and others met to discuss the various systems that work with at risk children to identify areas that could be improved to help protect our children. One of the key projects of this group is to educate the public (both individuals that are mandated by state law to report child abuse and those that are not). Beginning in April we will host monthly workshops that will be open to the public, to teach people how to identify and report child abuse. PARENT HELP LINE
Another project in the child abuse prevention efforts is the creation of a Parent Help Line and a Parent Hotline. Members of the Family Support Committee met with staff form Hilltop’s Latimer House on March 7th to discuss how they could pool their resources and work with the existing Domestic Violence Hotline.
